Landowners, Groups Work to Preserve Acreage Along Sheepscot River
October 26, 2009 -
NEWCASTLE -- More than 500 acres of land and three miles of frontage along the Sheepscot River will be protected forever, thanks to two landowners and two organizations.
Landowners Joe Barth of Alna and William Weary of Newcastle worked with the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association and the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine to preserve the land.
The $1 million project, called the "Heart of the Watershed," has been 10 years in the making. According to Maureen Hoffman, executive director of the conservation association, donations for the project were received from six foundations, two private donors, four government agencies and four nonprofit agencies.
