Mt. Abram Ski Area in Greenwood Pushes Back Opening by 5 Days

December 18, 2011 - Greenwood — Citing warm weather that has made snow-making difficult, Mt. Abram delayed its opening date again from Saturday to next Thursday, Dec. 22.

General Manager Kevin Rosenberg said the ski resort will have a wide range of terrain ready for skiers next week.

“It's unfortunate, but we want to open with conditions for skiing and riding of all abilities,” he said.

“It's just five more days,” he said.

Rosenberg said he expected strong snow-making over the weekend.

Mt. Abram is also building a new, temporary lodge to replace the main lodge that burned in July after a lightning strike.

“We're ready for everybody to come and see the new home. We're wish it was this weekend,” he said.

A full moon hike and the premiere of the Ski Channel film "Winter," both scheduled for this weekend, have also been canceled. Mt. Abram will reschedule both events later in the season, according to a release from the ski area.

This is the second delay this year for Mt. Abram, which originally announced a Dec. 10 opening day. Warm weather has melted snow and hampered snow-making.
