Sugarloaf Making Snow for Friday Opening

November 14, 2011 - Carrabassett Valley — Sugarloaf Mountain has begun making snow for the ski season.

As of Friday afternoon, snow-makers had more than 40 snow guns online at the ski resort, from the top of the SuperQuad to the bottom of "Chicken Pitch," according to mountain operators. They expected to bring more guns online at lower elevations throughout the night.

In a press release, mountain operators said Sugarloaf plans to keep making snow during good snow-making temperatures — five hours of 25 degrees or lower — to meet its scheduled opening date of Friday, Nov. 18.

"Our first day of snow-making is exciting every year," said Rich Wilkinson, Sugarloaf's vice president of operations. "It's been a busy summer for us up here and we've been working hard, so it's a great reward to see those snow guns come to life."

Sugarloaf spent $4.3 million this past summer on off-season upgrades, including a new Skyline Quad chairlift and more than 100 acres of new terrain in the Brackett Basin area. The resort also installed a new digital drive in its SuperQuad lift to make it more reliable and to cut down on stops.
