Maine’s Free Family Fishing Days

May 30, 2011 - Rumford — Contrary to what's stated in the current Ice and Open Water Fishing Law Book, Maine's Family Free Fishing Days were not over Memorial Day weekend.

They are Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5, said Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

“It was just a typo,” she said. “The correct dates have been on our website all along for the last year or so.”

The free fishing event is open to anyone except those whose licenses have been revoked or suspended.

All fishing regulations on gear, bait, and bag and size limits apply.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities in Maine, drawing thousands upon thousands of residents and out-of-state visitors to the state’s nearly 6,000 lakes and ponds and almost 32,000 miles of rivers and streams.

Approximately 286,000 people a year buy fishing licenses in Maine, and the sport has a $300 million impact on the state economy.

On Wednesday, department Commissioner Chandler Woodcock spoke highly of the state's annual spring ritual, the last two free fishing weekends offered this year.

“One of my fondest memories is when I was 3 and my grandparents took me fishing for the first time,” he said. “That experience began my lifelong appreciation for Maine's outdoors.”
