Chamber Wants Summer Tourist Booth on Route 25

December 13, 2010 - STANDISH -- The Sebago Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce is calling on all Standish businesses or building owners on Route 25 to help with the chamber's newest endeavor: securing space for a seasonal tourist information booth for the summer of 2011.

"We have just started the process of talking to businesses about a possible marketing area for the chamber during the heaviest travel times of the year," said Barbara Clark, executive director for the Chamber. "We hope to have a location for the 2011 season."

The booth would ideally be set up in a small area of an occupied business or in an unoccupied building willing to host the Chamber from mid-June to mid-August. The Chamber, whose headquarters are on Route 302 in North Windham, would be responsible for staffing the information area but would need help from the prospective property owner with services such as Wi-Fi and power.

The need for a seasonal location along the Route 25 corridor arose earlier this year when construction plans for the Naples causeway, where a another Chamber station is located, were finalized. The construction will last two years and during times of heavy construction, traffic will be detoured along Route 25. Although there are many towns along the corridor, Standish seemed like an obvious choice, Clark said.

"Based on input from the businesses in Standish that are part of the Chamber already and visibility of the town, we thought Standish was a good area to start the process," said Clark.

Standish Town Councilor Lynn Olson was excited to learn of the new opportunity for the town.

"We were thrilled to find out the Chamber was looking for a space in Standish," said Olson, who is also a member of the Standish Economic Development Committee. "The Committee and the Council would love to hear from interested businesses or property owners. We will help you in any way we can."

To be considered, a property would need to have a few requirements including adequate parking.

"The location would have to have enough parking to accommodate buses, campers and cars that may be traveling with trailers," said Clark. "A property where people needed to park on Route 25 would not work."

Olson believes hosting the chamber would benefit all parties.

"I think our businesses would see more revenue, our town would see more visitors and the Chamber would be able to reach more people," said Olson. "I think this could be a win-win situation."

Clark agreed.

"That is our ultimate joint goal."
