New, Solar-powered Residence Hall Planned at Unity College

October 11, 2010 - UNITY -- A Belfast contractor will attempt to meet an unprecedented standard of energy efficiency in its design of a new residence hall at Unity College.

The college announced Monday that GO Logic Homes of Belfast will design the building, which will run almost entirely on solar power.

Unity received a $389,000 grant from an anonymous donor to build a residence hall based on so-called passive house-design principles, which includes positioning rooms and windows so that the building collects and retains heat well.

The Illinois-based Passive House Institute US will determine whether the building meets its official design standards. If it does, it would be the first college residence hall in the nation to do so. The building, which will cost about $500,000 to construct, is slated to be finished in about a year, said Unity spokesman Mark Tardif. Students will be involved in the design and construction of the building, he said.
