ATV Rider Dies of Injuries Suffered in Crash

October 04, 2010 - BLANCHARD TOWNSHIP -- A Blanchard woman who suffered serious head injuries when she drove her ATV off an embankment and fell 25 feet into a small stream died Sunday.

Jane Grant, in her mid-50s, was driving an ATV along the county line near Bald Mountain Road in Blanchard Township on Sept. 25 when she went off the embankment, according to Deborah Turcotte, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The ATV landed on Grant, pinning her to the ground, according to Maine Warden Service Sgt. Chris Cloutier. Grant, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious head injuries.

A friend traveling with Grant went to get help, but when he returned with a motorist he could not find the crash site. A search lasting more than 2 1/2 hours ensued before Grant was located and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She died Sunday morning.

She is the second person to die as a result of injuries suffered in ATV incidents in the last week.

On Friday, Alfred Shaw, 32, of Derby, died when he lost control of an ATV on a wet, leaf-covered trail in Brownville Junction. He suffered a head injury and died at the scene. Shaw also was not wearing a helmet.

Maine Warden Service Lt. Kevin Adam is reminding ATV riders to always wear a helmet and to ride at a reasonable speed, taking into account experience levels and trail conditions.

"law, anyone under the age of 18 years, whether a passenger or an operator, is required to wear a helmet," Adam said.

Blanchard Township, in Piscataquis County, borders Somerset County.
