Lew Wetzel Receives Volunteer Lake Monitoring Award

August 19, 2010 - CASCO -- Lew Wetzel of Casco was presented with the 2010 Outstanding Volunteer Lake Monitor Award at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP) on July 31 in Turner.


Lew was recognized for outstanding commitment to the protection of Maine lakes. He is president of the Pleasant Lake and Parker Pond Association, succeeding the late Joel Bloom who passed away last July. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of VLMP.


The Pleasant Lake and Parker Pond Association (PL/PPA) has waged a successful campaign to keep milfoil from spreading from Lily Brook in Casco into Pleasant Lake and Parker Pond.


As a Volunteer Lake Monitor, Lew measures the clarity and dissolved oxygen in the waters of Pleasant Lake and Parker Pond every two weeks during the summer and samples the phosphorus content yearly. This information is eventually published by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. He has personally purchased additional equipment to perform these measurements as well as underwater video camera equipment to monitor the progress of the Pleasant Lake and Parker Pond Association milfoil eradication program. He has been called on by other lake associations to talk about the success of this program.
