Lakes Environmental Association Celebrates 40 Years of Lake Protection

August 19, 2010 - BRIDGTON -- Members and potential members are invited to help the Lakes Environmental Association celebrate 40 years of lake protection with a big birthday party on Tuesday, August 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Camp Takajo in Naples.

The event is free and open to the public, but anyone who would like to enjoy a gourmet box supper (from the Good Life Marke in Raymond, $12 each) should buy a "meal ticket" no later than Aug. 23, because only a limited number of box suppers are available. Birthday cake will be shared by all.

When LEA was founded by a small group of Long Lake residents in 1970, the first Earth Day had just been clebrated and the Environmental Protection Agency hadn't even begun work. Since then, LEA has grown into an influential organization with about 1,400 members, including families, lake associations and businesses. LEA provides comprehensive water testing for 37 lakes and ponds; environmental education to children and adults; technical services for towns and individuals, and is a statewide leader in the effort to prevent and control invasive aquatic plants.

At the celebration, which also serves as an annual meeting, LEA will raffle off a kayak package donated by L.L. Bean. Tickets are available at the LEA office now or at the party for $1 each or 6 for $5. The lucky winner can take his or her new kayak home that evening.

Two great items also will be auctioned off at the party Aug. 24. The first is a lovely framed painting of LEA's Holt Pond Preserve donated by Elna Stone, an award-winning watercolorist and a long-time LEA member. Bidding starts at $200.

The second item to be auctioned is a week's stay (date to be arranged) in a condo at the Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, donated by an environmental activist. The condo, which is located in Summerhouse, is a quarter-mile from the beach, but alos has a secluded, "away from it all" feeling. The condo includes one bedroom (with two queen size beds), one sofa bed in the living room, one bath, full kitchen and a balcony overlooking the lake. It's next to the main resort complex, which includes three onsite golf courses, pool and play plaza, helath and fitness center, bike rentals and bike trails, tennis courts, fishing lake, private beach access, wireless Internet access and day spa. Bidding starts at $500.

To reserve a box supper, mail or bring $12 to LEA, 230 Main Street, Bridgton, ME 04009, or call 647-8580 to pay by credit card. You'll get a paper "meal ticket"--entitling the bearer to one box supper. You can pick up your tickets at the LEA office or at the meeting. Please reserve early. Only those with a ticket will get a box supper.
