Seaplane Crashes in Brandy Pond

August 12, 2010 - NAPLES -- Two people escaped--one of whom had only minor injuries--Sunday afternoon, when the plane they were in capsized after they tried to land on Brandy Pond just south of the Causeway.

Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating the crash that occurred around 2:15 p.m. on August 8. According to Maine State Police, the occupants of the plane were two veteran pilots, a man and woman in their sixties.

The plane's two occupants, who have not been identified, were helped out of the overturned seaplane by over a dozen nearby boaters who rushed to their aid. They also secured the capsized plane so it would stay afloat according to some witnesses.

The Maine State Police credited the Naples Fire Department with doing a "great job" keeping the fuel from the plane contained in the booms.

The plane is registered to New England Seaplanes in Naples, according to the FAA's database, and is a Quest Kodiak 100 fixed wing turbo prop single engine plane.

Investigators cleared the crash scene just under 10 hours later.
