Pondicherry Park Bridge Takes Shape in Bridgton

July 15, 2010 - BRIDGTON -- Henry Banks was dripping with sweat, red in the face, and probably in dire need of a glass of water last week when he looked up at the work of his fellow volunteer builders on the Bob Dunning Bridge Project and said, "To be doing this together for Bob is a good day."

Last week, on two of the hottest days of the summer, local builders started the Bob Dunning Bridge, which will be the main entryway for Pondicherry Park. The Bridge Project is a memorial to craftsman, activist, and community member Bob Dunning. The historic representation of a covered bridge will feature a distinctly artistic design, locally grown hemlock, and a labor of love for those dedicated to its completion.

Led by renowned timber framer, Andy Buck, crastmen such as Terry Hubka, Henry Banks, and Brian Grady and joined by volunteers Ken Murphy, Paul Waterhouse, George Erikson, Skip Sullivan, Hank Wernau, Stan Cohen, Steve Collins, Paul Pauliukonis and Scott Finlayson lifted heavy beams up a plank high over the Stevens Brook. They then carefully and methodically set the beams to form the beginning of the covered bridge span.

Project supporters brought lunch and liquid refreshments on both days and the builders paused to eat together and be in the community that surrounds the Pondicherry Park project. These friends worked hard in quiet appreciation of each other for a cause that will forever benefit this community. This is how Bob would have wanted it.

The Bob Dunning Bridgw is the final, and most important, piece of the Pondicherry Park project. Project organizers are still looking for support in the form of donations, labor and lunches. If you would like to give in any way, call Lakes Environmental Association at 647.8580, Loon Echo Land Trust at 647.4352 or visit the park Web site at www.pondicherrypark.org.
