Harold Alfond Foundation Challenges Belgrade Lakes Group to Raise Funds for Public Docks

July 05, 2010 - BELGRADE -- To get $450,000 from the Harold Alfond Foundation, the organizers of the campaign to get public docks in Belgrade have four months to raise that amount.

The group Docks to Doorways announced the challenge grant in ceremonies Sunday at the opening of the first new docks on Mill Stream and the beginning of the public phase of the fundraising campaign.

Supporters gathered near the newly installed wooden docks.

Docks to Doorways stated aim is "to revitalize the village of Belgrade Lakes and to improve water quality in the region," according to a statement from Loren Wright, the campaign manager. Plans also call for a new community park and a 3,500-square-foot lakes resource center in the village.

The campaign to raise a total of $2.5 million has attracted support from the Alfond Foundation, as well as from Colby College, The Belgrade Lakes Association, and the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance.

More information about the campaign is available at www.dockstodoorways.com.

"We are very pleased to announce today that we have exceeded our June fundraising goal of $1.5 million and are well on our way to raising the remaining million by Columbus Day 2010, but we will need everybody's help to succeed," Gail Rizzo said in remarks prepared for Sunday. Rizzo is co-chair of the fundraising committee.

In addition to building the new conservation resource center, Docks to Doorways also has plans to restore public docks and a boat house for a historic mail boat made famous by the movie "On Golden Pond."
