Firefighters Fight Blaze on Long Pond in Rome, Maine

May 31, 2010 - ROME -- Firefighters from three towns this morning battled a blaze on Blueberry Island on Long Pond that is believed to have started as a camp fire.

The fire on the island, located on the north end of the pond, was reported to Waterville Regional Communications Center at 7:38 a.m., according to Dispatcher Sarah Bailey.

Firefighters from Rome, Belgrade and Mt. Vernon fought the fire, which burned about an acre, according to Rome Fire Chief Gary Foss. Smithfield firefighters were on standby during the fire.

Foss said the island is privately-owned and the owners discovered people on the island Sunday and asked them to put out their camp fire and leave, which they apparently did, according to Foss.

Firefighters accessed the island by boats and used portable pumps to fight the fire, Foss said. They left the island at about 11:30 p.m. No one was hurt fighting the fire, Foss said.
