Time to Stock Your Pond

May 01, 2010 - Augusta -- The Annual Trout Stocking Sale sponsored by the Kennebec Soil & Water Conservation District is under way. Pond owners can purchase brook trout with the added convenience of picking up in Augusta. Brookies are a native species in Maine and may be stocked statewide. People must have a permit to purchase brook trout.

Permits, $10 for a five-year period, are available directly from the Maine Department of Inland Fish & Wildlife. They must be obtained before ordering. To obtain a permit, submit a map pinpointing where the pond is located and send to IF&W with the application for each pond. People with questions are invited to contact the department at 287-5261 or visit maine.gov/ifw

Pickup is at 1 p.m. Monday, May 17, at the Kennebec District office, 21 Enterprise Drive, off Route 27. Permits must be presented on pickup day. Orders must be received by Friday, May 14, in order to be filled.

A copy of the trout sale order form may be downloaded at kcswcd.org. To receive forms by mail, or to have one's name and address added to the mailing list, contact Dale at 622-7847, ext. 3.
