Maine Canoe Symposium

April 14, 2010 - BRIDGTON -- Looking outside at my dreary lake with splats of snow and rain on the window its hard to envison that in less than two months it will be time to take to the shores of Moose Pond for the 25th annual Maine Canoe Symposium.

It's never the same year to year...some old timers have faded away and a host of newcomers arrive each year. This year there will be a little reminiscing about old faces as we laugh at photos taken in 1986. Wow, you got old..I didn't..well I don't feel old.

But as ever the focus is forward. There is a great kids program that teaches some about nature, camping and of course canoeing. Someday who knows in 25 years our kids will bring their kids to MCS.

Some of the worskhops are tradition..after all its a weekend canoe camp and tradition is important. One institution is Harry Rock..modern poler. Harry is one guy who really does NOT get old. Becky Mason is coming from Canada to teach Canadian Style paddling, and Maine Guide Lisa De Hart is doing her Chicks with Sticks clinic( this is poling, not cooking kebab). Intro and more advanced tandem and solo paddling, Northwoods stroke, canoe orienteering, fly fishing, weather reading are some other skills that will be taught. There will also be a outrigger canoe clinic and a canoe repair clinic..and there is more. It will all be on the website by May 1.

This year there is a special emphasis on Native Trails with David Cook and Zip Kellogg is bringing some videos of 1940's canoeing in Maine

Maybe you have come to Maine Canoe Symposium in the past but another new year beckons.

This is a weekend canoe camp for canoe heads. Bring your boat if you want to. Its at Camp Winona in Bridgton June 11-13, 2010
