Dog Rescued from Maranacook Lake

March 23, 2010 - READFIELD -- A dog was expected to recover after falling through an icy section of Maranacook Lake on Monday.

Fire Chief Matt Dunn said the dog, which appeared to be a black Lab, was in the water for approximately 15 minutes before rescued by a passer-by.

The dog appeared to be in good health, Dunn said. "It was definitely cold and tired," he said.

Firefighters were called to Maranacook Lake around 12:30 p.m. Monday when the dog fell through the ice near the Weathervane Restaurant and Lounge.

"I got there shortly after that," Dunn said. "There was a gentleman on the shore calling the dog."

The man on shore was not the dog's owner, Dunn said.

The dog was trying to swim through about 75 feet of thin ice that floated about 50 feet off shore, Dunn said. The dog was breaking through the ice but was obviously tired, Dunn said.

Dunn called for Manchester and Mount Vernon firefighters to respond with boats, but he called off that assistance.

"Fortunately, a resident on the shore was able to put in a paddle boat and go out and rescue the dog," Dunn said.

The dog was returned to shore and taken to its owner.
