Maranacook Lake Ice-Out

March 22, 2010 - WINTHROP -- The Maranacook Lake ice is out of here, disappearing earlier than ever before, according to a veteran ice-out watcher.

Al Godfrey, of Winthrop, has been tracking ice-out dates on Maranacook since the 1960s, and has records kept by others dating to 1925.

Godfrey said he declared the ice out of the large lake Sunday. Godfrey said there were still a couple of small pockets of ice in some coves, but the lake was navigable from the public boat launch in Winthrop north to the public boat launch in Readfield.

Godfrey said the March 21 ice-out is the earliest on record. It went out on March 25 in 1981 and 1982. It has gone out in March only five times in the 85 years of record-keeping.

The ice sage attributed the early ice-out to the warm weather of the past several weeks.
