Sharing an Ice Time on Long Lake at Naples Winter Carnival

February 16, 2010 - NAPLES -- Lack of snow did not hold up the festivities at the 11th annual Naples Winter Carnival on Saturday, as hundreds turned out at Long Lake.

With blue skies and temperatures near 40 degrees, many participated in the first Hannaford Ice Fishing Derby, while others watched snowmobilers competing in the Radar Run.

The event featured helicopter, snow-coach and sleigh rides, along with ample entertainment for kids. Mainers brought out the old machines for the Antique Snowmobile Show, hosted by the Iron Butt Vintage Riders Club.

For those who wanted to warm up, free hot chocolate, movies and various activities were provided at the Naples town gym.

Ice fishing was good on the lake, too. Children fished for free, while adults paid a small entry fee to benefit the United Way.

The carnival, which started Friday night with a snowmobile torch parade, continues from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, with more of the Radar Run and awards for the fastest racers.
