Beach Items Surface in Litchfield Winter

February 09, 2010 - LITCHFIELD -- Not all summer items have vanished from sight.

Items from summer boating -- including several boat lifts, ramps and a float -- are frozen into the ground on town-owned beach property on Peacepipe Shores, which fronts Lake Cobbossee. And town officials are trying to identify the owners to get the items removed.

Town Manager Michael Byron said Monday he and Codes Enforcement Officer Steve Ochmanski inspected the property and will report their findings to selectmen at tonight's regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m.

Byron said one concern is that a snowmobile trail leads from the lake up through the center of the town-owned lot. One property owner said the items could prove hazardous to snowmobilers, Byron said.

At the Jan. 26 meeting, selectmen voted to have the town manager write to the owners of the items order the removal within 30 days. If the items remained, the town's public works crew would do it and bill the owners.

However, Byron said it has proven difficult to identify the owners.

He said he consulted with Steve Lemieux, president of the Peacepipe Shores Road Association, but he did not know who owned the equipment.

Byron said he would continue to try to determine the ownership and whether selectmen still want to have the items removed because everything is frozen in place.

On a separate matter, Byron said the town's first budget work session -- which includes selectmen and the Budget Committee -- is 6:30 p.m. March 2 at the Town Office.
