Episode of 'Makeover' has Maine Angle Covered

December 15, 2009 - WINDHAM -- Sunday's episode of ABC's hit show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" will have a Maine twist.

That's because Windham-based Kids Crooked House installed one of its whimsical children's playhouses as part the home makeover filmed in Erie, Pa., in June.

Glen Halliday, the company's owner, said a designer from the show saw one of his playhouses at a trade show in California and was impressed.

"They wanted to get us involved in one of their shows, so in June we drove to Erie," Halliday said Friday. "It was a very cool experience."

The show is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC, which is broadcast locally on WMTW (Channel 8). Halliday said the show's producers couldn't guarantee that his playhouses or anyone from his company will be shown.

The episode involving Kids Crooked House focuses on a new home for Clara Ward, who suffers from a degenerative muscular condition and runs a nonprofit youth development center from her home.

Kids Crooked House was featured on TV earlier this year.

In June, a highly anticipated episode of the TLC reality show "Jon & Kate Plus 8" spent lots of time showing Kids Crooked House playhouses being installed for the eight children of Jon and Kate Gosselin.

It was the episode in which the couple announced they were splitting up.

After that episode, Halliday said his business e-mail list quickly grew from 2,500 to 30,000. And the Web site for his three-year-old company got millions of visits.

Halliday said that even if his playhouses don't get shown on "Extreme Makeover" and generate attention for his business, the filming was an unforgettable experience.

"With 'Jon & Kate,' there were just a couple of camera crews, but with 'Extreme Makeover,' there were camera crews and workers everywhere," Halliday said. "They blocked off eight city blocks and basically created a town within a town to hold everything they needed."
