Conservancy to Protect Arrowsic Land

December 07, 2009 - AUGUSTA -- The Nature Conservancy has purchased a conservation easement to protect 275 acres on the Back River in Arrowsic, part of a continuing effort to conserve land around the Kennebec Estuary.

The easement, purchased from the Holt Woods Research Foundation, includes three miles of river frontage, land next to Sewall Pond and more than 50 acres of saltmarsh habitat.

The Kennebec Estuary and its tidal marshes are important to migratory fish and other marine life, as well as bald eagles, shorebirds, waterfowl and wading birds, according to The Nature Conservancy. The easement allows for scientific research on forest ecology and forest management, as well as educational uses.

Maine's Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife helped the conservancy secure a National Coastal Wetland Conservation grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The property connects to other conservation lands, creating a 1,075-acre block of nearly contiguous protected land. Conservation groups and government agencies have protected nearly 18,000 acres within the Kennebec Estuary over several years.

More information on the Kennebec Estuary is at www.nature.org/maine.
