Power Outages Affect More than 18,000

December 01, 2009 - AUGUSTA -- More than 18,000 power outages were reported in Maine on Saturday as a wind storm brought gusts reaching more than 50 mph.

The winds were blamed for the partial collapse of a small hangar at Bethel Regional Airport on Saturday that severely damaged an airplane, according to the Bethel Police Department.

Police said heavy winds knocked over a tree that landed on the hangar. Another plane in the hangar received minor damage. Nobody was injured.

The incident took place at about 11:45 a.m.

At the storm’s peak early Saturday afternoon, 18,313 Central Maine Power customers were without power, the company reported. By 10 p.m. there were fewer than 6,300 customers without power. Hardest hit was the Skowhegan service center, which serves 29 towns from Pittsfield to Jackman.

More than 70,000 power outages were reported throughout northern New England. Most were in New Hampshire.

Some outages started Friday night as an offshore nor’easter brought the first heavy snow of the season to the White Mountains. Mount Washington, Crawford Notch and other mountain locations in New Hampshire reported at least 10 inches.

Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Carrabassett Valley reported receiving a foot of snow, enough for the resort to announce it will be open for the season today.

The following CMP service centers reported outages: Skowhegan, Farmington, Brunswick, Bridgton, Alfred, Portland, Augusta, Lewiston, Fairfield and Dover.

Wind speeds of 50 mph of higher were recorded on Saturday in Turner, Madison, Sanford and Rangeley, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
