Scouts to Honor Hancock Lumber President

November 17, 2009 - PORTLAND -- The Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America plans to honor Kevin Hancock, president of Hancock Lumber, with its 2009 Distinguished Citizen Award at a ceremony tonight at Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.

The award is given each year to a community leader who's lived his or her life by the scouting oath and law, according to a spokesman for the Pine Tree Council.

"I'm happy to receive this award on behalf of and as a part of Hancock Lumber," said Hancock in a video that will be played during the dinner.

"I feel scouting is so important to youth in Maine, because the focus of the Pine Tree Council and the Boy Scouts is really on the scout and I think there is nothing more valuable that can be done than to help build self esteem and pride and confidence and perseverance in young people."

Hancock, a former Boy Scout, took over the family-owned company in 1999, following the death of his father, David Hancock. Kevin Hancock began working at the family-owned business in 1991 at the sales counter of the Yarmouth store.

He serves as president of the Bridgton Academy Board of Trustees and coaches several youth sports teams. He lives with his wife, Alison, and daughters Abby and Sydney in Casco.

The ceremony and dinner will take place at 5:30 p.m. Former Gov. Angus King will deliver the keynote address.
