Don't Like to Ski? That's Not a Problem

October 13, 2009 - Those who don't ski or ride have so much more to do at ski resorts than they once did.

Gone are the days of sitting in the lodge watching television or reading the newspaper – not to discourage that. As far as non-ski fun, many more ski areas have tubing parks, Nordic trails and marked snowshoe paths. But even if the folks in your party are simply non-winter sorts, there are amenities for them to enjoy while you find the fresh stuff.

For non-skiers just interested in a sauna, dinner and some live music, Sugarloaf has some of the best local bands as well as some headliners.

In the past, the Carrabassett Valley mountain has drawn John Hiatt, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, the Derek Trucks Band and the Rustic Overtones. Tickets generally range from $10 to $30 for a seat in the King Pine Room.

Shawnee Peak is also a mecca of live music and shows. Comics and popular local rock bands such as Bruce Marshall (formerly of the Marshall Tucker Band) entertain western Maine skiers. The new extension that opened last year and increased space in the lodge by 25 percent now has WiFi, so ski parents can watch their children while surfing the Internet.

"As much as we want people to learn to ski, we know some are just not going to. They can set up shop in front of a window and look out," said Shawnee Peak spokesperson Melissa Rock.

Sunday River – even as it improves snow making and lift lines – also continues to offer more for non-skiers. In addition to live music at the Foggy Goggle and a relocated ice skating rink, the gondola rides will be coupled with fine dining at the top of the North Peak every Saturday.

"We change the menu each week to offer local produce. We want these fine dinners to use fresh ingredients," said Darcy Liberty, director of communication at Sunday River.
