Police Help Rescue Bowdoinham Girl Caught in Current

August 18, 2009 - GARDINER -- Two Gardiner police officers helped rescue a teenager Thursday after she was swept away by strong current in the Cobbosseecontee Stream.

Lorretta Pottle, 15, of Bowdoinham and friends were in a popular swimming spot behind Mill Stream Restaurant between Winter and Water streets when she got caught in the rushing water.

"She was swimming with a couple of friends upstream, where it's calmer, and swam out too deep," Gardiner police Officer Michael Durham said. "She was swept away about 100 yards and ended up on a tree."

Durham said the 911 call came in about 11:40 a.m., and help arrived within minutes.

"Fortunately, her friend was quick-thinking enough to call 911 immediately, so response was very quick," Durham said.

An ambulance took Pottle to MaineGeneral Medical Center. Durham said she was pretty badly shaken up and complained of neck and knee pain.
