Man Missing After Diving into Sebago Lake

August 04, 2009 - WINDHAM -- The search for the body of a man who went missing after diving off a boat on Sebago Lake will resume this morning.

Authorities called off the search for the 21-year-old late Monday night, several hours after he disappeared in Jordan Bay in water as deep as 50 feet.

Mike Joy, a district game warden, said the man is believed to be a resident of Cape Elizabeth. He was with four friends who spent the day swimming.

His friends said he did not resurface after diving into the lake from their motorboat.

"They were swimming off their boat, enjoying a great summer day," Joy said. "He experienced some type of problem at a point very close to the boat. They tried to reach him but were unable to. One of them even dove into the lake after him."

The man's name won't be released until relatives have been notified.

A massive search began around 4:30 p.m., with dive teams from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department and Maine Warden Service. Several firefighters from Windham and Raymond assisted, and a Maine State Police cadaver dog was used.

A plane also made several passes over the lake.

Joy, who leads the warden service dive team, said diving conditions were relatively good.

Divers concentrated their efforts in Jordan Bay, about one mile from White's Bridge.

None of the people in the boat was wearing a life jacket, officials said.
