Main Street Gets Rained Out in Monmouth

July 28, 2009 - MONMOUTH -- Main Street was expected to remain closed today after torrential rain from Monday's storm washed away a large section of road.

"We have a major washout," Fire Chief Andre Poulin said.

Main Street will be closed between the north and south ends of Academy Road until Main Street is repaired, Poulin said. Traffic is being re-routed onto Academy Road.

The Maine Department of Transportation will return to evaluate the washout today, Monmouth Public Works Director Herbert Whittier said.

The washout, which occurred near the trailer park, removed about 5 feet from the edge of the road for about 100 feet, Whittier said.

"I'd be surprised if it's open (today)," he said. "The road is passable with a vehicle, but it's not safe to put a vehicle on it."

It is unknown exactly how much water Monday's storm dumped on the area, but a National Weather Service flood advisory posted just prior to the washout, around 5:30 p.m., warned the storms could produce between 2 and 3 inches of rain.

"It seemed to be a localized storm that went through this area," Whittier said. "This section of road is a problem, but I've never seen it bothered that bad. That was a tremendous douse of water in a short period of time."

There were smaller washouts on town-maintained roads, Whittier said. Berry Road and a few smaller roads in North Monmouth remain passable but will need work in the ditches, Whittier said.

"I have a lot of smaller ones, but nothing like they have," Whittier said.
