Androscoggin Yacht Club Celebrates its Centennial

July 28, 2009 - WAYNE -- The Androscoggin Yacht Club has a 100-year-history to celebrate this year, and members are hoping a pleasant-weather weekend will let the centennial festivities go on.

Events, most of them open to the public, kick off Thursday with an opening ceremony at the club featuring Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, Rep. Gary Knight, R-Livermore Falls, and Ed Kallop of the Wayne Historical Society as speakers.

Dunlap will present the club with a certificate of incorporation to honor the yacht club for its 100 years, said Amy Cushman Black, the yacht club's vice commodore.

"We are praying for good weather because we want to have this outside," she said.

After the ceremony, several yacht club members with boats will offer "sunset cruises" on Androscoggin Lake, Black said.

"We invite other people to come out in the boats, who maybe don't have an opportunity to go out in a boat," she said.

Friday evening will feature a private cocktail party to which the yacht club has invited every living commodore in the club's history. There are about 25, Black said.

The yacht club elects its commodores. They first serve two years as vice commodore, two years as commodore, then two years as rear commodore.

"It's quite a commitment," Black said.

Saturday events start at 9 a.m., with a "Kids Fun Run," in which participants will receive a free Tubby's ice cream, followed by a 5K race at 9:30.

"It's not a real competitive run," Black said. "We're trying to get as much participation in it as possible. They can walk, they can jog, they can run, they can do whatever."

Saturday events also include a crafts fair, children's activities and two sittings of a chicken barbecue. Tickets are $8 per person, Black said. She said those interested in attending should purchase tickets in advance by calling Barb Rothe at 524-5082.

A fireworks display begins at 7 p.m., according to Black.

"We'll have more vantage points to see the fireworks, other than right in front of the club," she said.

The club wraps up its centennial celebration Sunday with a blessing of the boats at 7:30 a.m. by the Rev. Kristin White of the Wayne Community Church and a 1 p.m. regatta around Androscoggin Lake.

The Androscoggin Yacht Club is at 22 Lake St. in Wayne.
