Three Swim to Safety After Canoe Overturns

May 20, 2009 - CHINA--Three people were able to swim to safety Monday after the canoe they were paddling overturned on China Lake.

Identifications for the man and two women were not available, but all were at least 18 years old, said China Rescue Chief Danny McKinnis.

The survivors were warmed and evaluated by rescue personnel at the scene but declined to be taken to the hospital, McKinnis said.

The canoe overturned around 3 p.m. when the boat was about 300 yards offshore in the area of Loon Cove Road.

"There were life jackets in the boat, but they didn't all have them on," McKinnis said.

He estimated the man and women were in the water for up to 45 minutes.

McKinnis did not know temperature of the lake's water, but none of the canoeists was injured.

China Rescue, China Fire, Delta Ambulance and the Maine Warden Service responded to the call for help.
