Driver Escapes Serious Injury in Collision with Moose

May 13, 2009 - LINCOLN -- A young man from Massachusetts avoided serious injury Friday night when his car hit a moose on Interstate Route 95 about two miles south of the Lincoln exit. The collision took place at about 10 p.m.

William Gilbert, 24 of East Bridgewater, Mass., was travelling north to visit a friend in Aroostook County, according to Trooper Adam Coover of the Maine State Police.

“At the last minute he looked up and the moose was there in the road,” Coover said. “He didn’t have time to do anything about it. He hit it head on.” Because the impact occurred toward the passenger side of the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina sedan, Gilbert escaped serious injury.

The moose, a young male weighing about 500 pounds, was killed and the car was a total loss, Coover said.

Gilbert suffered only a minor cut on his forehead, Coover said. He was treated at the scene and accepted a ride to Houlton from a passerby.

Coover said car-moose collisions are likely to become more frequent as the weather warms.

“The flies are coming out and driving the moose out of the woods,” he said.

The availability of fresh vegetation along roadsides also brings moose out. Drivers should exercise extra caution, especially in foggy weather and at night, Coover said.
