Maine Heritage Village Gets Ready to Open in Wiscasset

April 29, 2009 - WISCASSET — There's a new lighthouse in town, but it's not on the banks of the Sheepscot River. It's right on Route 1, and it will have a waterfall inside that pours into a tank with 2,000 live lobsters in it.

Outside on a covered patio, huge boiling pots of water and massive grills will cook lobsters and steaks and hamburgers.

It's just one part of the Maine Heritage Village at the corner of the Old Bath Road, where carpenters have been working to get the restaurant, a vendor's barn and at least a half-dozen small buildings ready for a May 16 ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Project manger Tony Cassella points to a corner where there will be an 18th-century popper that will produce lobster-flavored popcorn made with dehydrated lobster. Outside will be an old-fashioned hot dog cart from New York, and inside at the counter, barrels of ice cream. Along the front of the property will be farm carts, which local growers can rent for the season to sell their produce.

Several nonprofits also will be represented at the village.
