Mild Earthquake Rattles Region West of Rumford
November 19, 2008 -
RUMFORD An earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale hit just west of Rumford Thursday morning.
The earthquake happened at 5:26 a.m. about six miles west of the town center, according to the Maine Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The agencies said there were no reports of damage but the quake likely was felt by residents in the area.
"Typically, damage does not occur until an earthquake reaches magnitude 5, about 20,000 times more powerful than this morning's earthquake," said Dr. Robert Marvinney of the Maine Department of Conservation.
