Casco Voters Reject Recall Ordinance and Reval Request

November 05, 2008 - CASCO -- Two initiatives brought to the ballot because of a backlash about a property tax revaluation were handily defeated in Casco elections.

Questions 2 and 3, asking for a recall ordinance for public officials and a new revaluation paid for through town surplus funds were rejected by voters, with Question 2 losing 1,015-873 and Question 3 losing 1,448-503.

The questions were two of four local referendums. Question 1, asking voters to close Casco Memorial School passed 1,492-460, and Question 4, calling for removing the community center, was rejected 990-957.

Casco voters also did their part to return Rep. Rich Cebra to Augusta for a third term representing House District 101 as the Republican defeated Democratic challenger James Krainen 1,171-882.

Sen Bill Diamond’s bid for re-election was bolstered in Casco as the Democrat defeated challengers Thomas Golebiewski, a Republican and Green Independent candidate Lisa H. Willey 1,210-506-306.

The repeal of the beverage tax was passed 1,393-653 and the effort to build a casino in Oxford passed 1,215-844.

In the races for national seats, Sen. Susan Collins turned back the challenge from Rep. Tom Allen 1,341-743, and Republican Charlie Summers defeated Democrat Chellie Pingree 1,084-994 in the race for the 1st District Congressional seat.
