Kennebec Trails Group Plans Fall Walk-A-Thon Fundraiser

October 01, 2008 - WATERVILLE -- Participants are needed to come out for the "Fall Foliage 5K Frolic," a walk-a-thon to benefit Kennebec Messalonskee Trails to start at 9 a.m. Oct. 11.

The Fall Foliage 5K Frolic will start at Benton Elementary School and continue on the Rotary Centennial Trail, which runs alongside the Kennebec River from Benton into Winslow.

All proceeds from this event will be used to help build a new 2-Cent Bridge Connector Trail and to help maintain existing trails, including signage and amenities.

Kennebec Messalonskee Trails' mission is to promote, create, and help maintain recreation and fitness trails along our waterways connecting the communities of Waterville, Winslow, Benton, Fairfield and Oakland.

To date, about 6 miles of trails have been completed. Another few miles are in progress with funding already approved. Kennebec Messalonskee Trails has plans to add an additional 22 miles to the system over the next seven years.

"This will be the first of what we hope becomes an annual Walk-A-Thon. We feel this is a natural fundraiser for us, because of our work in creating trails in the five communities," said Donald F. Sproul, executive director of Kennebec Messalonskee Trails. "We hope the people of these communities turn out to support us in what should be a fun event."

Preregistration is strongly encouraged. Participants may pre-register and download pledge sheets online at www.kmtrails.org.

The first 25 walkers to preregister online will receive a carabiner with compass and split ring. All who pre-register online are entered in a drawing for an urban backpack.

Pledge sheets are also available at local schools, local banks and credit unions, and the REM office at 96 Main St., Waterville.
