Invasive Fish in Pickerel Pond

September 24, 2008 - LIMERICK— Biologists say a fish whose species poses serious environmental risks has been pulled from a southern Maine lake.

A koi fish was pulled from Pickerel Pond in Limerick. Wildlife officials say it's illegal to bring the invasive, carp-like fish into Maine. Koi aren't native to Maine's waters and are originally found in Japan.

Wardens caught one koi but have received reports of other sightings in Pickerel Pond. They plan to net off the drainage area to get the rest of the unwelcome fish.

Koi can survive in Maine's cold conditions. Biologists say koi are known for destroying vegetation necessary for trout's survival. They can produce up to 30 times more eggs than similar-sized native trout.
