Lakes Represented in Roundtable Talks

September 17, 2008 - CASCO -- The Casco Conservation Committee sponsored a forum of regional lake leaders August 21 attended by dedicated lake stweards from Coffee Pond, Crescent Lake, Raymond Pond, Trickey Pond, Panther Pond, Thompson Lake, Parker Pond, Sebago Lake and a representative from the Otisfield Conservation Committee.

Barbara York, chair of the Casco Selectboard, moderated the meeting. Charlie Turner, president of Raymond Waterways Protective Association, shared lake monitoring statistics gathered for the past several years, illustrating water quality comparisons from yearly testing. Charlie has been a lake monitor for over 30 years.

Colin Holme from LEA in Bridgton shared many methods that are being used by the LEA in the removal of milfoil. Bob Francis, Parker Pond, shared his stewardship and removal of milfoil on his lake.

All lake leaders indicated that good stewardship is the most important issue to address for area lakes. Other issues are the threat from Eurasian milfoil, pristine maintenance, shoreland protection, the need for more educational material for lake homeowners, over development, water quality, and publications of newsletters for the general communities. It was also mentioned that flyers should be given out at town meetings illustrating methods of preserving lakes and streams.

It was noted by it lake leaders that the speed of boats and boat racing this year has been significantly slower and safer for other boaters on the lakes.

Area lakes are in need of interested people to volunteer in the identification of invasive plants, or as boat inspectors and lake quality monitors. Those interested should contact their town office and ask for more information about becoming a steward of the lake in your town.

Lake leaders attending the roundtable discussions felt that gathering together once a year in sharing ideas of their lake stewardship and methods each use in keeping our lakes clean is a valuable educational tool for all participants.
