Deputies Pull Woman From Water at Songo Locks

August 13, 2008 - NAPLES -- A kayaking trip through the Songo Locks in Naples turned perilous Wednesday morning, leading to the dramatic rescue of a woman by Cumberland County deputies.

According to Capt. Jeff Davis of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Carol Emmons, 51, was found in the water near the locks at 7:51 a.m. Wednesday. She was clinging to a rope and in danger of getting swept over a waterfall downstream.

Davis said Emmons indicated to deputies John Cross and Howard Brown that she could not hold on much longer in water conditions described as swift and cold.

Cross leaned over a wall to grasp Emmons by the arm as Brown grabbed a rope from his cruiser and then tied a loop around Emmons. She was pulled from the water just as Naples Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene, said Davis.

Emmons, vacationing in Maine, was treated for hypothermia and released. Davis said she'd been kayaking with her daughter Zoie and the two were thrown into the water due to the fast current.
