Junior Boat Inspection Program Begins Second Summer

April 23, 2008 - CASCO -- The Pleasant Lake/Parker Pond Association 2008 Junior Boat Inspection Program opened a second summer at a Friday assembly of fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at Crooked River School in Casco.

The director of the inspection program, Fred Cummings, introduced this program for students with an explanation of the importance of this program in preventing invasive plants entering into the lakes through boat entry, which will help keep our lakes clean and protect the waterways against these invasive plants.

Fred illustrated to students the methods being used in removing milfoil through means of benthic barriers placed at strategic locations at the bottom of the lake. Many Crooked River School students asked numerous questions regarding these invasive plants, and great interest was demonstrated by the students throughout the session.

Alex Theriault, a seventh grade student from Lake Region Middle School, and an alumnus of Crooked River School, spoke to the students about his experience as a Junior Boat Inspector last summer. He emphasized to the students, teachers, and staff that he had learned a great deal about invasive plants, enjoyed meeting many boaters, and wishes to join the inspection program again this summer. He encouraged sixth-grade students to participate in the program and join him in keeping lakes clean.

Registration forms were passed out to students inviting them to attend a training program and boat inspection in June. Sixth-grade students who are interested in the Junior Courtesy Boat Inspection Program should call Fred Cummings at 627-3234.

Pleasant Lake/Parker Pond Association extends thanks to Crooked River Elementary School principal Cheryl Turpin for her enthusiasm in allowing the presentation of this program to her students.
