Logging Truck, Excavator Crash Through Lake Ice

March 26, 2008 - EAST WINTHROP -- It's not just snowmobiles that are crashing through ice-covered lakes in Maine. A logging truck and an excavator were the latest casualties when they broke through the ice on Cobossee Lake in East Winthrop.

Hickey Tree Service owner Ron Hickey said his employees on Wednesday took down trees at a camping area on the lake shore and loaded them onto the truck.

When Hickey prepared to drive off at the end of the day to drive off, the back end of the truck broke through the ice. When an excavator was brought in to lift the back end out of the water, it too went through the ice.

The truck and excavator were pulled out of the lake on Thursday.
