Wardens, Fishing Derby Organizers Warn Anglers To Watch For Thin Ice

February 26, 2008 - CASCO -- The 8th Annual Sebago Lake Fishing Derby And Winterfest begins Friday, Feb. 22nd. And while there's plenty of good ice for fishing, organizers and the Maine Warden Service are warning people to be careful where they tread.

Many parts of Sebago Lake are in good shape for anglers, including much of Jordan Bay and the Lower Bay. But there is some open water in the main bay of the lake, and some places just started to ice over in our recent cold snap.

The best advice is to take a boring before you settle in to fish and make sure the ice is at least 6 inches thick. Sergeant Tim Spahr of the Maine Warden Service said, "Stick with the parts of the lake that have the activity and the ice may be a little more solid."

There will be extra wardens out on the lake to make sure people are staying safe, and to help with any emergencies.

Proceeds from the derby go to Camp Sunshine, and organizers hope to raise close to $100,000.
