SnoFest Currently Under Way in Greenville

February 26, 2008 - GREENVILLE -- Kicked-off by the 100-Mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race, the festival of winter activities known as SnoFest got under way last weekend. Billed as proof that the local inhabitants of the North Woods do not hibernate once the snow arrives, this collection of events has appeal for lovers of both outdoor and indoor activities.

And Friday evening, Feb. 15, all are invited to come inside for the Chili and Chowder Cook-off, an annual event in which local eateries dish up their chili and chowder, competing for the number one spot in tasty, with you as the judge. Sponsored by the Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club (MRSC), the event will be held at the clubhouse on Scammon Road, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.

The next day, Saturday, Feb. 16, pull on your long undies and plan to spend the day outside. There's a wide variety of happenings from which to pick and choose. At 9 a.m., MRSC will lead a its annual two-three hour family snowmobile tour of area lakes and mountain, holding a cookout on a local pond. The destination will be announced at the safety session and lunch is on the club. For more information, check the MRSC Web site, www.MooseheadRiders.org. or call 695-4561. It's back to the MRSC clubhouse at 1 p.m. for an aftemoon of fiin family activities. For more information on the fun and games, call 695-4561. At 6 p.m., the MRSC will host a bonfire and snowmobile parade. East Cove will be lit up with a bonfire and the parade route will head out from East Cove to West Cove and come back again. Who wants to cook after spending all-day Saturday outside? Head to the American Legion Post No. 94 on Pritham Ave. on Sunday, Feb. 17 and have your fill of pancakes and all the fixin's including eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, homemade donuts, juice, and coffee. The folks begin serving at 7 a.m. and won't stop flipping the flapjacks until 10 a.m. And if you didn't get your fill at the pancake breakfast, or even if you did, beginning at 1 p.m. you can sample some of the finest chocolate at the third annual Chocolate Festival sponsored tiy the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce. Held at the Columbia-Doric Masonic Hall, the chocolate festival will tempt all until 4 p.m. For the price of one ticket, participants may sample 15 of an expected 30 delectable chocolate delights. The first annual Kokadjo Kids Sled-a-bration will be taking place on Thursday, Feb. 20. Make plans to bring your family to this aftemoon of fun! With Igloo Building at 4 p.m. and a Bonfire at 5 p.m. There will also be hot chocolate and goodies and a raffle. The money raised from this event will go to the Roach Ride's Snowmobile Club and the Shaw Public Library Children's Section. For more contact 508-880-0181.

On Thursday aftemoon, Feb. 21, Doug Kane, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist, will lead a program on Deer Yard and Land Management, taking folks to Lily Bay State Park to view winter deer yards and to discuss the impact of landowner management practices on preserving deer yards and other Maine wildlife habitats. Participants should have snowshoes.
