Insurance Coverage Developed for Maine Lake Associations

February 13, 2008 - CAMDEN -- The Allen Agency of Camden and the Maine Congress of Lake Associations have partnered to offer affordable insurance for Maine lake associations. This partnership developed after discussions between concemed lake associations and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Office of Risk Management.

Seeking insurance coverage for their invasive plant prevention and control operations, lake associations leamed that state govemment's legislatively-authorized liability protection does not extend to them.

"The insurance program we've created with Maine COLA can serve as a model for lake associations across the nation," said Gene McKeever, the commercial marine insurance agent at the Allen Agency, which provides the insurance coverage, "The insurance packages, available to every citizens' lake group in Maine, are affordable and stated in understandable terms."

Lake associations protect a valuable Maine resource, said McKeever, and insurance can protect that work from a claim. The insurance is intended to protect lake associations and alliances engaged in activities in, on and near water relative to invasive plant control, placement of navigational buoys, public education about invasive aquatic species and recreational activities.
