Togue Draw Winter Anglers To Moosehead

January 29, 2008 -
GREENVILLE -- According to Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife there are too many lake trout in Moosehead Lake. So they teamed up with the COC and race car driver Ricky Craven to hook some togue and reel in money for charity.

Ice fishing is a pasttime Ricky Craven has enjoyed his whole life.

"It's something that I did as a kid and it's something that my children have done," Craven told NEWS CENTER. "I just think it's a great way to spend a January and February outside in Maine."

That's why Craven wanted to include an ice fishing derby in his annual fundraiser at Moosehead Lake. Craven says it's been a great addition to the snowmobile ride.

"I've done this for ten years and it's just fabulous to be able to come home," he said. "It's great to have an 11th consecutive ride but it's even better to be able to include the fishing derby."

Tim Obrey of Maine Inland Fisheries And Wildlife said the Fishing Derby is a great way to raise money for charity and keep the lake trout population under control.

"Talk about a win win, it's more like a win win win win because it helps us get the fish out to meet our goals," he said. "We're raising money for some local charities both local and national. And we're bringing people to town to help some of the businesses in town. And we've really seen a great increase in the number of kids and families fishing."

And for Craven, time with loved ones is what ice fishing is all about.

"I think it's time with family, it's great entertainment, it's as much social as it is active," Craven said. "It's just a great way to catch up with friends and family and meet new friends."

All the while giving nature a hand and raising money for a good cause.
