Man Uses Canoe to Elude Deputies; Search Called Off

October 31, 2007 - RAYMOND - A local man used a canoe to escape sheriff's deputies Tuesday morning after they attempted to arrest him on a pair of outstanding warrants.

Police said Nicholas Mains, 29, was the passenger in a pickup truck that made an abrupt turn to avoid a traffic checkpoint on Rte. 302 in Raymond around 9:30 a.m.

When deputies later stopped the truck on Main Street, Mains fled into the woods, according to a written statement from the Cumberland County Sheriff's office.

Deputies went to the man's Meadow Road (Rte. 121) home and waited, the statement said. When Mains saw police, he ran to the beach near his home, grabbed a canoe and paddled across Panther Pond.

Police chased Mains again when he reached the east shore of Panther Pond. Deputies used police dogs to search the area, but called off the hunt around 12:30 p.m.

Mains is wanted on warrants for failing to make court appearances in York County.
