Sanford Residents Invited to Brainstorming Session for Waterfront Project

October 16, 2007 - SANFORD - Town officiais are looking for good ideas for a waterfront project that could bring new life downtown. Members of the public are invited to a brainstorming session set for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 in the third-floor council chambers of Town Hall Annex. The input received will help town officials prepare a sound proposal eligible for state funding, should voters approve the $5 million Riverfront Community Development Bond on the statewide ballot in November.

Town Manager Mark Green said a good waterfront project on Number One Pond or the Mousam River could sustain the momentum that has developed around redeveloping the downtown and the mill yard.

"We decided to ask Sanford's citizens and stakeholders what their ideas are before settling on a project because our success so far has really been the result of the broad public support for redevelopment," Green said. "We hope people take the opportunity to brainstorm and contribute to continued success."

Members of the Town Council, the Planning Board, the School Committee, the Community Development Advisory Committee and Sanford Downtown Legacy, developers and town staff are also invited. The bond money is intended for projects that connect people to waterfronts in a way that protects the environment while promoting recreation, economic development or community vitality. Parks, boating facilities, mill redevelopments are all examples.

The river bond will appear as a question asking voters if they support borrowing $35.5 million for land conservation, rivers, working waterfronts, parks and historic sites, and other purposes. If the bond passes, grants will be made available on a competitive basis with local communities required to contribute matching money or in-kind services.
