Toothaker Pond Closed for Phosphorus Control

October 05, 2007 - PHILLIPS - Toothaker Pond located in Phillips has been undergoing a draw down of the pond beginning on Sunday, September 23rd. The project is being carried out by the Toothaker Pond Association (TPA) under the direction of the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection in an effort to reduce high levels of phosphorus which contribute to annual algae blooms. The draw down will consist of one foot of water being siphoned out of the pond.

Geologists estimate that the pond will recharge itself by the time the snow melts, perhaps sooner. The project should last approximately one week and end on September 30th. During this time the TPA requests the general public to refrain from boating, fishing and other activities at the pond. It is vital not to disturb the shoreline during this period. Questions related to this project may be directed to environmental engineer Nancy O'Toole at 639-3033.
