One Dead, Four Hurt as Plane Flips on Kezar Lake

August 15, 2007 - Lovell - A float plane carrying five people flipped onto its side and submerged while landing on Kezar Lake on Saturday, killing the 69-year-old pilot, authorities said.

Four family members -- two adults and two children -- were transported to hospitals. One of the children, a four-year-old, was flown out by helicopter, the Maine Warden Service said.

The names of four, and their conditions, were not immediately available.

The single engine Cessna 206 was landing on the lake at about 10 a.m. when it flipped over about 300 yards from the western shore, prompting boaters and cottage owners to rush to the scene, Warden Service spokesman Mark Latti said.

Witnesses told wardens that rescuers helped the survivors exit the plane, but the pilot was trapped inside when it went down.

Latti identified the pilot as Joe Solari of Fryeburg.

The plane was towed to shore and was resting upside down between a float and a dock on the western shore of the 2,500 acre lake, which has been frequented by such celebrities as Stephen King and the late Rudy Valley.

Holly Baker of the Federal Aviation Administration said an investigator was en route to the scene.
