Film Crew at Camp Winona on Moose Pond

July 24, 2007 - Bridgton - A program called "Incredible Maine" needs incredible subjects, so for what could be their first season of shows on MPBN, the independent film crew came to Camp Winona, on the shores of Moose Pond.

The Bridgton camp for boys is marking its 100th summer in 2007.

"It's a friendly family camp; there is such a family feeling here!" Marilyn Taylor, the show's producer appraised last Thursday, as the show's host LC van Savage waved at campers departing on a canoe trip, while Marilyn's husband Dave Wilkinson bent down almost into the water to get a waves-eye view of the departure. "The relationship between the counselors and the campers is warm and wonderful to see."

Host Al Ordway, Winona's longtime camp director, said the film crews wanted to get a slice of camp life for one of the first shows in a television series, which will feature a variety of Maine subjects, everything from programs on Arcadia to fiddle camp.

Camp Winona is no stranger to film crews this summer, its centennial year; the camp seemingly has been in the news on every channel going, from WCSH to NECN.

A documentary is just the next logical step.

Marilyn Taylor of "Incredible Maine" explained, "We are in talks with public broadcasting; it isn't final yet, but we hope they pick us up. We are planning 15 shows for the first season."

She said her little crew has been producing its own series for some time for local cable access, and that is how the Harpswell company caught the eye of public television. Their shows will feature professional level production values, and figure to be a combination of documentary and entertainment. LC van Savage is presented in most episodes as a personality and a provider of information. Dave Wilkinson supplies not only the video -- "he has a photographer's eye," Marilyn praised -- but the soundtrack, too, as he and his band play original music in the background. Marilyn brings to the cooperative effort the programs overview, its contacts, the scheduling -- and the worry lines.

"We have a lot invested in this, without a lot of guarantees," she said last Thursday. "So we're really working to make it happen. In the meantime, we are getting to see just how incredible Maine really is!" She gestured to the beckoning pond, the disappearing canoes, a far, white sail, and the line of green mountains hunched over all. "This area, for example, is so wonderful, and we never even had been here before."

"I hope we'll be back!"
